Diabetes is a condition where blood sugar in the body rises to dangerous levels. There are two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2. People with Type 2 diabetes are at a higher risk for heart disease and stroke. Risk factors for Type 2 diabetes include family history of the disease, being age 45 or older, having gestational diabetes during pregnancy or being African American, Hispanic, Asian American or Pacific Islander, being obese, having high blood pressure and smoking.

Symptoms

Early stages of diabetes often exhibit no symptoms, but later symptoms may include increased thirst, appetite and urination; fatigue and blurred vision. People who suspect they have diabetes should see their doctors to be diagnosed. Diabetes can often be managed with lifestyle changes and medicine, but it's vitally important people with diabetes get proper medical treatment to manage the increased risk of heart disease and stroke.
