Cardiomyopathy in Adults

Cardiomyopathy refers to diseases of the heart muscle, where the heart muscle becomes enlarged or rigid, and eventually weakens. There are several types of cardiomyopathy, and they can lead to irregular heartbeats, heart valve problems and heart failure. It can be inherited or acquired.

Symptoms

Sometimes there are no apparent symptoms, but visible symptoms can include shortness of breath, fatigue, swelling of ankles, feet, abdomen, legs and veins in the neck. There are several tests and procedures that can be done to diagnose cardiomyopathy. Sometimes no treatment is necessary; but depending on the type and severity of cardiomyopathy, treatment includes medicine, lifestyle changes, surgery and implanted devices.
